Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve is a 25 minute drive north of the village of Haliburton, and allows ATVs to run many of their 200 kms of winter snowmobile trails. The fee is $44 for the day including HST. These trails are pretty smooth, and tend to be groomed and open even when most OFSC trails in the province are closed. The Forest can be reached at 705-754-2198 for info.
There are also two non-OFSC ATV trails which are directly accessable from the village of Haliburton with about 15 minutes of sanded (but not salted) road running.
To those who are familiar with the ATV trails between Haliburton and Gooderham, these two non-OFSC trails are known as the Hillbilly and the Goat trails. These trails tend to be "challenging" at the best of times, but unless there has been a recent dump of snow, these trails are quite ridable by 4WD bikes, preferably with mud tires.
Both these trails are also accessable from the parking area on Telephone Bay Rd.
