Hey Tom55 I had an 09 XP 850 and have had it for only 14months.
It has 2769kms on it and these KMs were just regular riding, nothing crazy and this is what I have found.......

- Inner tie rod ends replaced twice.
- outer tie rod ends replaced 3 times
- front lower right A arm bushings replaced
- 3rd set of brake pads are needed at this time
- both front upper shock towers have significant wear in the rubber bushings
- Both rear axle into rear differential splines are very worn. Slopppyyyy !!! New male couplings are $259.99 each, New rear diff $600.00 or so
- A ton of play in the power steering unit.
- The steering shaft moves up and down an inch
- Engine breather valve pucks out oil into your Airbox unless you drill a hole in the hose
- Valve cover gasket blew out and engine oil down the side.
- Starter is going and doesn't engage the first or second time
- The EPS unit will have to be replaced. That's $1200.00 folks !!!!!
- ???? I'm sure there is something else I'm missing

So you are asking whether you should get one??? How deep is your wallet?
After a year of riding and some 2769KMs approx the bike is crap. I will never, ever buy a Polaris bike again....EVER!!!!

The guys I ride with have Can-Ams and do NOT have nay of these issues! even the bikes with higher Kms. I am getting a Can-am in the spring.

Your decision on what you want to buy is up to you, but this is my experience with this bike.

Tom55 - save yourself all these heartaches and buy a Rincon so you can spend your time riding rather than fixing :-)

Hey pal anybody can give you a one off situation with any atv where it did not perform good many variables come in to play so taking the opinion of one or two people does't give a fare or accurate account of the machine in general there are probably many people who could counter these opinions but just don't bother, maybe you should focus on the positive aspects of all makes, and what it is you want in a atv.

u know you cant leave the polaris brand tom..LOL

If your looking at an 850 consider the 2011's..they re vamped most of the issues noted above..always issues with a new model year. 2009 850's and 550's have been a whole host of issues, 2010's got a LOT of them fixed but the 2011's seem to have addressed the other smaller issues.

but all that would of been covered under warranty if the bike was bought new right?

PS..u forgot to mention the rear axles been replaced on most due to a bad CV design on the 09's....again..fixed and re vamped on 10's upwards.

I agree, that with anything new, there will be problems to sort out. Even after the problems are fixed, every so often there will be a lemon, regardless of what brand. Waxola, I believe you got the one that was a lemon, but what happens if your new Can-am has problems also? I do hope that your next bike is less problem than what you have had though.

Wish I'd known you were interested in an 850 tom..we had Kens up here 2 weekends ago for some mods and fun. could of come down and took it out. Its the 2010 and apart from regular wearable parts like balljoints and a cpl bearings thats the only issues and after riding our trails you know thats gonna be a gimmie on ANY quad..LOL

He'll be back up mid feb with it..let me know!

6 Month warranty and that's long gone..... The CV joints are fine it's the splines that go into the rear diff.

Anyway the Can-Am will NOT have the issues that this XP 850 has. I have seen some of the Can-ams that I ride with and these
guys are harder riders than I and they don't have any of the issues I have PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Say what you will. Never ever a Polaris again !!! Completely friggin ridicules that I should have to spend up to $1600.00 in repairs for a bike that is a year old.
I should take the bastards to court..... :finger:

Enjoy your Polaris Tom55...... You'll see.

You should probably take them to court and quit complaining. Listing your problems once in a thread should be enough. YES your 09 had problems, LEMON? Probably yes. All brands have their weaknesses.

Anytime you start playing in the mud, well be prepared to open your wallet. Ya gotta pay, to play.

not so sure why ya so hostile waxola....like i said , i aggree 100% the 09's were a nightmare and know plenty of other owners who had similar issues.
Rear axles were replaced under warranty but ur dealer totaly blew u off as it was a warranty covered part and a known issue...shame they wouldnt stand behind ya on them. To be honest it makes the small cost of the extended warranty pretty cheap...i know i wouldnt spend 10 grand on something without extended warranty, especially a quad.

All bikes have issues...never heard of the bendy frame can ams? or the 08/09 can ams that had a defective clutch cover that let water in and wasnt covered under warranty? I know we towed 4 can ams out with blown motors with less than 1000km on them in 09 just off our trails alone. hell at the poker run a renagade just clipped a tree and bent the fram like a banana..and that was a 2010. Again..ALL brands have issues..probably hear more about polaris coz theres a lot more of them out there.

Each brand has good and bad points, i love my popo and yes it breaks..but thats mainly due to a heavy thumb and slightly retarded operator. I know a lot of guys with the 10's and they havnt seen the issues that the 09's have after a years riding, and some of these quads are mudding machines so take a LOT more abuse than the regular trail ridden quad. my buddies hit 1400km without a single issue related to polaris parts...the 30" silverbacks did help bugger a ball joint, but that cant be blamed on the factory parts.

Its a buyers market right now and if i had to buy new again i would be torn between a cpl of the brands, but with 4 popo's sat in the garage...it would feel strange having a diferent brand sat alongside them..LOL

I know how you ride tom...don't matter what quad ya get...your gonna bust it..its the nature of the way we like to ride..LOL

One thing i would mention is to test drive a NON power steering unit Tom. The actually steer a LOT lighter than even my 800 due to the new style geometry and i'm not 100% convinced that it's worth the extra 1500 to have it on.

Like English said I have 1494 km on my 850 and only issues related to Polaris are a bearing and ball joint and those were after GLATV mud and 30" Silverbacks. My other issues were related to design tweaks needed when lifting and snorkeling the bike nothing that could be blamed on Polaris and have been real happy with the bike.

Also when visiting friends in Calgary and riding in the Rockies 1 week after purchasing the 850 new one buddy took it for a spin and 3 days later he had a 09 850 that was October of 2009 and he rides the mountains around Calgary lots of water, rocks, mud and his only problem was a oil leak from a bad head gasket dealer warranty no problem. His brother also bought a 09 850 December of 2009 and he has had an issue with the ball joints and thats it same type of riding in that area I would guess they each have 1500-2000km's on their machines and are very happy with them.
